It really was steep!! Maybe that's why it bothered me so much. I don't know. I just know that I lost a great deal of respect for that mother on that day.
Not that I have a problem with people dressing nicely. If I had an adorable little girl like that, I would have wanted to dress her nicely too. But I bet I could have done just as nicely for $25-40 instead of $225.
And I thought at the time that if I had been a totally new person and had overheard this conversation, I would never have come back to that church ever. I believe in supporting the ministry. But I also believe that those receiving the support have some obligation to be responsible with the way they handle themselves. Just as I believe each of us have to responsible with the way that handle what God has blessed us with. I can't, in good conscience, pay $225 for a little girl's dress when we have people in our church who are going hungry.

I totally agree, I loved wearing those little can can slips back then. But they weren't expensive, and I did not wear $200 dresses. I don't know anyone that did either. That just seems ridiculous to me.

but you have to realize
expensive for an official/royalty
is not the same as
expensive for a commoner

LOL! I know you well enough to know you were kidding, Sam!
Not everyone in our church dresses up. Our family does. My husband teaches Adult Sunday School every Sunday and feels more comfortable in a suit.
I dress more casual on Wednesday nights. My husband would never wear a pair of jeans to church, but he doesn't wear a jacket or tie on Wednesday night. That's just him and it's not a conviction, it's just that he doesn't want to.
We let our children wear their nicer tennis shoes on Wednesday night, but we all get dressed on Sunday morning.
One thing I would not and never have done is spend several hundred dollars on one single item (suit, etc.) for myself or my husband. There are sales going on all the time and you have outlet stores. I do believe in buying quality. The clothes are tailored better, fit better and last longer.

Oh no, PO, I am not thinking or saying that that kind of thing is a UPC thing only. Believe me, I've seen it in lots of other places. In fact, our neighbor is a Baptist pastor. I would never be comfortable in their church either because I know how she dresses. But that's just me.
Let me make myself clear on something tho, ok? I'm not finding fault with people dressing up for worship. I think that's fine. I don't do it. I wear nice slacks and tops for church and occasionally a dress, but never anything fancy cuz I'm not a fancy dressing kind of person. But it's fine with me if people do. UNLESS #1) the people dressing up look down their noses at people who don't or can't dress up like them and #2) if they spend excessive amounts of money on clothes and duds and then can't or won't give to help the needy.

Isn't that crazy?
95 degrees and all of us running around in long sleeves, ties and jackets.
I think most non-Pentecostal kids hear the word camp and immediately think of swimming, activities and the like.
Not three piece suits.

I don't remember boys in suits even at night. Just the preacher's wore suits.
