David said
"Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me." Why would such instruments bring comfort? The staff was used to direct the sheep and the crook of it used to reach out and bring a wandering sheep back into the flock.
The rod was used to beat away those who would prey on the sheep. It was also used to break the leg of a sheep that would not respond to the work of the staff. And wonder of wonders, David said it was a comfort. Why? Becasue whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth.
Sometimes the best correction is that which wounds us and causes us to remain still long enough to heal and be restored.
