Re: What is the ultimate purpose of God?
Whimsy suggests something less planned and thoroughly thought out...kind of spur of the moment. Not to say that there aren't some whimsical things that God has made ( 1 Cor 1:25, Rev 4:11) but the death of Christ speaks to a more deeper, substantial purpose behind creation, IMO.

sorry for not getting back sooner...
I can not make "desire" equivalent with "need".
I do not see our heavenly father ever acting from need and your scriptural cites would certainly provide correction if my thinking were to drift there.
IMO, desire is designed as a core motivation within us as creatures; in humankind. If it is with us as part of our invisible design, it is likely something that also pertains to our designer.
So if I rethink your thread starting question as "what is the ultimate desire God has concerning his own handiwork, I come back to "enabling a union established by true love".
Everything needed to fully reveal the true desires of my own heart is set by God's wisdom in crafting this present life.
His purpose is to give himself to the heart that seeks him with a desire that can not be satisfied by this present world.

Good answer!!! Why else would God want a body or a bride unto Himself?
