In my assembly we had a small choir for a short time. The thing is is that choirs aren't mentioned in NT worship, which really does it for me. I think ALL the songs should be sung with FULL involvement from the congregation, without separate attention given to choirs or solos or small groups. A leader is often necessary, but their goal should be to get the song started and for the congregation's voice to be what is heard! Praise GOD- it's GREAT!

Amen Brother. The Choir thing was ok till the real praise and worship with EVERYONE worshipping came in from the Jesus Movement and Charismatics.

If I loved close enough, I would come to your church just to hear the choir!

As far as full involvement by the congregation- well I have been in many services where the choir song "brought the house down". There are many different kinds of worship- I have been blessed many times in the congregation by choir songs-

This is true, and know how to step, sway, and clap.

Alex, are you a song leader? I think they had choirs in the NT churches. And dancing for the Lord.

Our church isn't FULL of black folk, but we have quite a few! Our worship pastor is A.M. so we have "gospel" flavor many times to our worship. Our choir definitely sings black gospel and EVERYONE loves it!
Our praise and worship, though, is pretty much a blend of style depending on who is leading. Our worship pastor is also a Commander in the Navy and is gone once a month, so our Youth Pastor leads then.

Re: The Death of the Church Choir
If I could actually choose what style of music our church played, it would be a 20-30 piece big band orchestra. I've never cared for gospel (Southern or otherwise) but LOVE big band and symphonic, especially live.
