Whether hell literally enlarged herself or not isn't the point! The point that Jesus was making is, there are going to be a lot more people there than you think!!!

When we understand that "hell" is the grave, then it is no big surprise that it is enlarged every day. Hell's meaning in literal is "the place of the unseen."

The only reference I see is Habakkuk 2.5 "...because he enlarges his desire as hell (Sheol, the grave), and he is like death..." Speaks of a man that is a drunk, and he increases his debt.
