Most of the time that does the trick.

That's pretty much the way I roll, as well.
I don't do "counseling."
I pray with people, point out Biblical principles for living, instruct, correct, rebuke and restore. But I do not counsel.

Why? If we are going to be biblical, let's have the scriptures on that.
The bible says WE, meaning all the church, are a kingdom of Priests. Maybe if some of the ministry starts treating and training the saints in that respect we would have less issues.
Where are the Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists and Teachers? Why is the only real recognizable position a Pastor?

- That the Holy Ghost is for today and is received by faith with the initial evidence of speaking in tongues.
- The saint will go on to strive to live a holy life, pleasing to God.

Re: How close should a pastor get to the members?
I believe a pastor can be 100% approachable, and still have a private life.

Speak for yourself.
I know men fulfilling the other roles in the five fold ministry.

Re: How close should a pastor get to the members?
Hey...if a non pastor gets burned by a non pastor should he then stop associating with non pastors? Since many of the Pastors shun him because he is beneath them that person is gonna be without fellowship.
I've heard pastors say "Your Pastor should be your best friend" and then turn around and essentially say "But you won't even be my friend let alone a best friend"...what a contradiction. What Hypocrisy

Re: How close should a pastor get to the members?
Well, since I'm not a pastor some may think my opinion is about simple as an opinion can get. But, how close should a pastor get to his members? I'd say about as close as a shepherd is to his sheep. And I think the Bible teaches that a shepherd gets as close to his sheep as he can get! Good posting Sir MOW!

I usually DO speak for myself...did you some how read "Amos" in my reply?
BTW those men fulfilling those roles...are they paid a salary while NOT also being the Pastor of a church? Do they get to go on nice expensive cruises once a year? Do they carry the title "Apostle" or "Prophet" or "Teacher"...
See I know men, and women, fulfilling some of those roles too but they are unknowns. They don't have trumpets anouncing their arrival as "Prophet so and so"...they get paid nothing for praying night and day for their Pastor, church and lost souls. They teach sunday school and bible studies and are unknowns. They bring more new souls into church than the Pastor ever did. And......they are somehow beneath "The Pastor" that the Pastor and that person can't be friends.

I guess I don't understand why you all would want to hang around us "evil" pastors anyway....

Yeah, those rotten pastors...hypocrites.
Dirty saps.
Prax, your posts reflect some of the nastiest attitudes on a consistent basis that I run into on this forum.
Your posts often come across as insufferably arrogant and know-it-all.
Just thought I would mention that.

Anyone can be 100% approachable and still have a private life. But hopefully most of us are not prejudiced against certain members of the body that we divide the body into inferior/superior classes and only choose friends out of the better....if the distinction here was race or color of skin we'd be talking racism
