Re: How close should a pastor get to the members?
I am a pastor, and there are some personal things I refuse to share with the saints.
I am not available 24/7. There are times I turn off my phone.
Sue me.

Funny thing is, when I left my pastorate to return to the secular work force, I thought, "Now I can work a more stable schedule and turn my phone off after 5 PM!". Silly me, now my phone is NEVER off!

Re: How close should a pastor get to the members?
I think we should use wisdom in all things...I love people and mix with them well...as a leader I am their example so I must be one! However that does not mean I am on some level that is far above my people...however I do agree that we all have our styles and personalities..
I have had people tell me they would go insane if they had as many people in their house as I do...I think I would lose it if I did not have friends in and out...
No matter what you do there are some people that will never respect anyone...they know more than the leader...(or think they do) ....so there are all types of people.

Re: How close should a pastor get to the members?
I once heard a wise man, while speaking to a group of pastors, say that "there are people dying to get closer to their pastor, and the minute they succeed, they will hate him."

That's a good idea, imo. I wish my father had done that when I was a kid. It's the reason why I have two phone lines at my home. One for my very close friends and family and the other for everybody else. One is published, one is not. The published one goes straight to voicemail and I call back people at my leisure, barring a genuine emergency. Everyone, pastor or not, should have boundaries for other people and should enforce them, imo. Others are free to disagree.

I have really tried to create an environment of God-reliance in our church. I refuse to counsel people about what kind of car they should drive and the like.

I have never had that happen. I think many times pastors fulfill their own fears and "torpedo" some of those relationships because they are insecure or fearful. Maybe some of those have a good reason to disrespect the pastor if he is not living the life. I'm not talking about perfection.

That is wise.
I feel the same way.
I tell our folks that they have access to the same God and the same Bible I do.
I do my best to teach them good life principles, and let them work out the application of those principles in their own personal situations through prayer and seeking the mind of the Spirit.
