Cancer to be world's top killer by 2010, WHO says

ATLANTA – Cancer will overtake heart disease as the world's top killer by 2010, part of a trend that should more than double global cancer cases and deaths by 2030, international health experts said in a report released Tuesday. Rising tobacco use in developing countries is believed to be a huge reason for the shift, particularly in China and India, where 40 percent of the world's smokers now live......

"Few are aware that cancer already kills more people in poor countries than HIV, malaria and tuberculosis combined. And if current smoking trends continue, the problem will get significantly worse," he said in a written statement.

What the article leaves out is that this death is being exported by US firms. Tobacco companies even target children there, giving away free samples.

For a time I wondered how Phillip-Morris et al could be making records profits the past few years with the climate the way it is in the US.

Though I do read here, I rarely post except in matters concerning Judeo-Christian values or philosophy. Things which are of interest to a Rosh Yeshiva.

But this bothers me, what is this country really exporting to the rest of world as far as values and priorities?

True most of world, thanks to televangelists most of the "third world" (whatever that is) just thinks of Christianity as another form of money grubbing capitalists.

TV will save the world? Hardly.

I think that is a highly emotionally approach.

The United States of America has exported many positive things to the world as well.

Sad. My husband has had cancer twice and doesn't smoke or do any of the high risk factors.

Following the lead in some recent World Court cases, and US Federal Courts even looking to other countries for precedent, it is only a matter of time until massive class action lawsuits are filed aboard against the US tobacco companies interests.

But I agree it would be a sad legacy if that is what we come to be remembered for among the poor of other countries.
