My wife is self taught on the piano. She can read a little music but mostly she plays by ear.
She has written quite a few songs over the years, mostly in the southern gospel style.

I read--but very weakly--which is the bane of most guitarists.
I read charts for studio work, but really, my studio work also simply includes familiarity with the song after a few takes, and then I just run with it.
I have fortunate enough to despise Chick Corea jazz forms, so I don't need to know it all.
Voices take a beating. Mine as well. I'm thinking of taking Ken Tamplin's voice course to preserve what I have (which is fair). A bunch of my friends are students of his. They just don't announce it
