That is true if you already owned it, it is transferable. In my case as with new computers, you are given a trial period then Microsoft makes you buy it or no longer allows you to use it.

My case was a bit different in that my son in law gave me my laptop with everything on it. But Microsoft works was paid for by his work and he is allowed to put it on a few other computers. It was a couple weeks after I upgraded to windows 10 that the trial ended with the windows ten. He then had to reinstall works using his certificate so I would have it again.

Before windows ten if it was loaded on a computer already you did not have to buy it. Now with windows 10 they make you pay for it unless you already own works.

Re: Microsoft

Actually, that's been the case for a long time. No computer comes with Office preloaded and activated, unless you ordered it direct from the manufacturer that way.

If you want easy, this is the way to go. Open Office is good also, but Google Docs is easier for newbies to get used to. Plus with Google Docs your document is stored online, which comes in handy.

Re: Microsoft

It was not sold as being a trial version . I mostly use Word and Excel.

Thanks for the input.
I was wanting to take that computer to church to use in my office.

If I download the free programs do you have to use online only?

Open office can be used offline.
Google docs cannot.

As the frog person said Open Office can be used offline. It is a free program you download. Just be sure and download it from a legit site like CNET or directly from "Apache Open Office" (you can google to find it).

Some dishonest places will take free software like Open Office and operate a download that includes adware. That is why I mostly use CNET's software download site to download. Even if they don't have the latest version once downloaded you can check for updates.

Open Office is very cool because it very, very similar to Microsoft Office so if you and use Microsoft Office you can use Open Office. Pus in addition to "Open office writer" which is like Microsoft Word you will have Open Office versions of Excel and Power Point.

"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.

"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.

"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."

Personally, I do not recommend EVER using CNet's Download.com. Their downloader tools (by that, I mean the downloaders they use for installing software from their site) are so full of junkware and adware, it's not even funny.

By the way, another free alternative is Libre Office.
