Re: born of water

Lets just let them baptize themselves and speak the name of Jesus over themselves.

Then we really need not rely on the preacher!!!

Why would somebody go through all the trouble of baptizing somebody and not believe?

The act of baptism itself is an act of faith!!!

Why do you evade my question, Sean? Of course they believe.

Let's try this again....

If the one being baptized has faith in his name but the baptizer does not say the right words, the person being baptized is not forgiven by God?

Re: born of water

If someone is baptizing a person, and cannot even say Jesus' name, they have no scruples and should not be baptizing.
They would be nearly an imbecile to not be able to say Jesus.

You won't answer because you realize the implications.

Re: born of water

To go in the name of the Lord in the Old Testament, as when David did not go against Goliath with sword or spear but in the name of the Lord, or Asa did not defeat the monstrous Ethiopian army with his own army but in the name of the Lord, is to believe God for His power that is greater than anything to deliver us!

So, baptism in the name of Jesus not only recognizes JESUS IS THAT ONE LORD GOD of the Old Testament, but that His POWER is what we are calling upon by actually speaking His name, to overcome this huge monster of sin and REMIT IT! But it's not merely calling the name, for the sons of Sceva did that and got no where in casting out devils. But it is speaking the name at the same time we TRUST in God's GREATER POWER to remit sins when our own works could not scratch the surface of sin!

I think we need to keep that in mind as well!

It is seeing God's power actually work in baptism, making it far from a mere outward sign of an inward work.

I cannot say for sure what God will do with such a person but it almost sounds like a person saving himself.

Re: born of water

Here is something more about invoking the name.

When the soldiers came to get Jesus in the Garden, they asked if He was JESUS, and He said "I AM HE." And they fell down. Sort of like Dagon falling down before the Ark.

On time a stoned man walked into our meetings. No small guy, either. I walked down the aisle and said, "In the name of Jesus!" And he fell down. He stood up again and I repeated it, and he fell again.

I prayed for a woman who'd never been in a church meeting before. As I prayed as soon as I invoked the name of Jesus, she crumpled to the floor. It was no show like you see in so many charismatic meetings with the people standing behind to catch those who fall, and saints just falling to look spiritual. She knew nothing of this. And went down when Jesus' name was spoken!

There is power in invoking His name in faith!
