I would love for someone being baptized to speak out about their commitment to Christ, instead of the preacher or baptizing person doing it.
I believe the whole baptism thing in the early church was just an outward commitment to let others around you know your decision to follow Christ. After all, Paul said Christ didn't call him to baptize, but to preach the gospel.
1 Cor. 1 ...
I think after much study, that the baptizer's job is simply to dunk the person in the water, but the words spoken out by the person being baptized are much more important, where they speak of their commitment to Christ, to follow Him, and to acknowledge His authority in their lives from that time on. I think baptism would be a more life changing event if this were the case.
