I bounce between being like my Indian friends who nearly demand professional degrees or at least an MBA and letting them go their own direction.

I will tell you there will be a very clear understanding that a degree in underwaterbaskeweaving is NOT ALLOWED.

if they want to teach, great, if they want a busnisess degree, great. if they feel a call to preach, then Im going to lean heavily that they get both a bible school education as well as either a business degree or a masters in psycology.

(I think the littleone is giong to be a rocket scientist... he tells me all the time he wants to build a rocket to send his older brother to the moon)

Personally, I don't think kids at 18 should be making firm decisions about their career (e.g., which degree they need). It's best to work on core curriculum and decide on specifics gradually as they are exposed to different interests and find out more about themselves and their abilities.

I agree with this statement.

I also want to mention that all faiths have had a serious decline in teens staying in church after graduating from high school.

When isolating your kids there is two lines of thoughts. Keeping them isolated and grounded and then putting them in public I agree with more than dumping them in the public realm with no parenting and explaining what we believe and why we believe it. Peer pressure is a serious problem that I see includes the parents as much as the children.

I do have family that have so isolated their kids they will have shell shock when the real world hits them.

A career choice can be changed... a dear friend of mine was just accepted into medical schoool after teaching elementry school for 17 years. Not that she did not love teaching but she missed her opertunity for medicial school and took an easier education degree when she married and got pregnant. In four short years she will be a doctor at the tender age of 45.

I am glad to see so many here that plan for their kids to go to college.

I like the concept of being open and flexible. I figure life forces us to become that way - so might as well plan to be open minded and willing to learn.

I start my children's college funds a few months after they are born.
