I Bible Quizzed for several years.
I am sure quizzing can cause pride, but not necessarily in every circumstance. Sure, as a child and teen, I memorized the verses because I enjoyed the competition, not because I was super spiritual.
Looking back, the trophies and awards mean next to nothing to me. But, even now, I still have a huge amount of Scripture hidden in my heart, and that has shaped me into the person I am today. And I shouldn't forget to mention all of the friendships and memories made.
Unfortunately, I have seen some parents regard quizzing as insurance that their kids will "stay in church." One mother in our church required all of her children to quiz for at least two years because statistically there is a very slim chance of "backsliding" in their adult years. (And the UPCI heavily promoted these studies.) However, what the statistics fail to measure is all of the young people who stay in church and outwardly live upright lives, but inwardly are backslidden in heart.
