Re: Proposal For New General Conference

CC1, I think you are referring to Brother Kenney Haney's installation service held at Life Christian Center on Gravois. It would seat several thousand people. And the books sales are so poor that selling them online would probably allow them to lower the cost and still ship them. (They ship them home for you now if you don't wish to carry them around the conference halls.) General Conference is very expensive and the in-house finance guys have been trying to get them to do it every two years instead of annually, for a long time. I think the "social pull" is a strong reason they wouldn't do something like you're suggesting. But who knows, in a decade, they may be ready for something like that.

Also, officials may not feel that they will do as well with offerings..less obligation or pressure.

You are probably right!

"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.

"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.

"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."

Kenneth Haney's install service was at Life Christian Center (which now houses Faith Church St. Louis) in Sunset Hills, MO.

David B's install service was held at The Sanctuary UPC in Hazelhood, MO.

Re: Proposal For New General Conference

After hearing some of the messages from GC's decades ago they should just do away with it. The preaching has become watered down mush so all it's become is a glorified fashion show with slick entertainment.

Now why on earth would you seriously make that kind of a suggestion? GC is a time of fellowship and renewal and you want to throw that away?

I would disagree. I have not heard every GC sermon by any means but over the past 40 years I have attended a few and have made a point to listen to key sermons pretty much every year and to my ears they still are the same "hold the fort" "everything is evil" "don't ask questions just do what your Pastor says" sermons.

Now it is true I have not heard red shoes preached against or short sleeves and I know that is pretty important to some of you so in that regard perhaps you are right!
