A Lesson in Pentecostal Hermeneutics

Numbers 2:1-2
1And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,
2Every man of the children of Israel shall pitch by his own standard, with the ensign of their father's house: far off about the tabernacle of the congregation shall they pitch.

It seems very clear to me that God is commanding all men who want to be children of God to play baseball at church with their father's old navy buddies, and they get to make up the rules as they go along.

Ha!!!. That's what my BIBLE SAYS...

Let's see you disprove THAT now.

Well, technically the "ensign" was just a naval position and though they were under the Department of the Navy throughout much of their existence, I don't think the Marines ever had ensigns.

See for example, Ensign Parker.

I think what you're getting at is the tendancy toward what D.A. Carson calls "wooden literalism." I've seen this come up many times - with myself included in the offenders. We tend to select a text that inspires us and attach an importance and emphatic literalism to it that is not always justified in the broader context.

Are there any practical examples of this that come to mind, master Yoda?

Acts 2:15 - we tend to add an inflection to the "as ye suppose..." and then go further to add that "Peter didn't say they weren't drunk! He just said that they weren't drunk as ye suppose..."

Genesis 1 - Six literal days. There is an application for this literalism in Exodus 20:11, however we suddenly get all metaphorical again when questioned about a literal seventh day sabbath.

Matthew 5:29; Matthew 18:9 and Mark 9:47 would be the anti-types.

oops... youngest just dramatically broke his wrist. Gotta run.

Maybe you can think of and share some other examples of wooden literalism as they apply to standards and salvation .... when you get a chance?

I have been revelated by this revelation! However, the words "far off about the tabernacle" seems to say to me that one should not play baseball with his fathers Navy buddies too close to the church. This could possibly lead to some window breakage, would it not?

He's going to be okay... where'd you go? Dan? Oh, it's now almost 4:30 AM and I don't think I'll be sleeping soon.

The distal end of the radius snapped and a piece of the radius along with the scaphoid were dislocated to a position on the distal end of the ulna. He broke his wrist and twisted it badly. Resetting wasn't as painful as we had feared and no surgery is needed at this point. His mother is babying him now. Kind of a long night but quality family time in the emergency room.
