Re: Rules provide no help in avoiding evil desires

I think it's interesting (and telling) that when Baron said "rules", many people made the connection to "God's laws" and reacted to his post accordingly. Doesn't that say something about our mindset, that we equate the rules of the church with the laws and instructions found in God's Word?

They are NOT one and the same.

Re: Rules provide no help in avoiding evil desires

I have mentioned this before about a pastor I know that took away a guys cell phone to help him serve God...lol...the guy is as far from GOD as the east is from the west...the pastor made a fool of himself...if serving GOD is not in our hearts a long list of rules will NOT do it...

Small point but it was Paul who said "rules" not Baron.

I guess I am a bit antinomian in my views. Many will take that to mean that I mean there is no right and wrong, and that isn't true. I do believe that man's religion is more of a hindrance to pleasing God than a help. Just like in Jesus' day the religious establishments do more to keep people out than bring them in.

I was referring to your thread title.

Can you explain "antinomian" to me?

Re: Rules provide no help in avoiding evil desires

Baron is a Virtue Theorists (sounds like), and rightly so. However, Virtue Theory alone has some weaknesses:

Ultimately, virtue theory must be able to resolve real-life, practical, moral dilemmas. Also, one's actions inform our valuation of their virtue (ie, Jesus). There were things he DID that inform us that he was a virtuous person.

Baron is right in that act-based ethics fall miserably short, but I believe Virtue-only Theory does as well --- though I would lean more heavily on Virtue Theory than the woes and perils of action-based ethics.

Ok, I agree it was stupid, but how was it criminal? Of course, I'm not the well-educated and card-carrying bar member that Baron is, but I do have some understanding of the legal topics that have been posted on this very forum. If the man is a member of that church and allowed the pastor to take the phone; He has consented to give the church, and that pastor, spiritual jurisdiction; And therefore, the pastor is covered by separation of church and state.
