If I could actually choose what style of music our church played, it would be a 20-30 piece big band orchestra. I've never cared for gospel (Southern or otherwise) but LOVE big band and symphonic, especially live.
The BEST field trip I ever went on in Elementary school. Was to hear the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Awesome!!!!!!!!!

I saw Manheim Steamroller in concert once, and it was unbelievable as well. There is just something about seeing a huge orchestra LIVE that is nothing like listening to it on a stereo.
First of all, I love church choirs! Our church has a pretty good one!
I do realize that trends change, and the praise teams seem to be the prevailing current trend.
I heard a guy a few days ago comment on the fact that we all tend to favor the type of music that was prevalent when we were teenagers. Folks my age tend to listen to soft rock radio stations these days. What was rock-n-roll in the late 70's and 80's is now soft rock!
I prefer a choir because that's the type of worship music that stirred my soul as a youngster. I still does to this day! God bless all the choirs!

Our church isn't FULL of black folk, but we have quite a few! Our worship pastor is A.M. so we have "gospel" flavor many times to our worship. Our choir definitely sings black gospel and EVERYONE loves it!
Our praise and worship, though, is pretty much a blend of style depending on who is leading. Our worship pastor is also a Commander in the Navy and is gone once a month, so our Youth Pastor leads then.
I've seen some of your videos. I do enjoy your worship, your congreagation, and the atmosphere of your church.

They stopped having our choir sing as well. My daughters were both very disappointed. Now there's just a chosen "few" singers who sing during every single service and that group is called the "praise team". Other singers are rarely used. It's sad, because there are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many talented people in our church--- who's talents aren't being used.
you are so right... so many talented people going without being used. Voices are not being developed and music is not being written like it was in the past.
I think Choirs are biting the dust in many churches.. I have noticed the trend.
I have sang in choirs, sang as a soloist and with groups, but I have always refused to be a praise singer... I can't worship comfortably in front of people who watch and I come to worship... Some people just sit and watch praise singers.... they don't get involved in singing anymore... I don't come to church to entertain, so I've never wanted to praise sing.
