You and OP have raised my interest in constitutional history and the particulars of a republic. I think that I'll have to go back and do some refreshing. One thing that I see as a potential for problems in a democracy is that all one has to do is find a vehicle to use to dupe or manipulate the public. There is a lot more wiggle room than in the strictest sense of a republic.
