Re: Thou Shalt Not Take The Name..........
I don't think this is necessarily one of those "either or" type of situations. For me the scripture means a whole lot more than just what I say.

I used to think this scripture meant what the generally accepted application is, but my thinking on it changed a few years while sitting at a Mc Donald's restaurant, reading my Bible.
Anyway, I was sitting at this McDonald's eating whatever it was I had ordered and reading this scripture. As I read it I asked myself what "taking" meant. I realized that when I became a Christian I had taken on the name of Christ. My identity had been changed. This revelation completely changed my viewpoint on this scripture. Where once it had meant to not cut loose with cuss words usually associated with this scripture, it now meant not to waste the change in identity God had given me. I decided to look this scripture up and see what "take" means. I was surprised to find that "use" was not one of the definitions. What say ye?

that was partially my point in moving beyond just this verse. We have to look at the whole of scriptures. however 'take' means or can at least include what you say. i used other verses to show this

Re: Thou Shalt Not Take The Name..........
Taking the name of the Lord in VAIN would mean using/speaking it for no reason. This is a poor analogy but it would kind of be like "crying wolf." It has no purpose in its utterance. The name of the Lord is sacred and should not be taken lightly.
However, using bad language is not taking the name of the Lord in vain unless the name of the Lord is used.
However, we are not to let filthy communication come out of our mouths. That's NT.

A casualness in regards to the name or anything referring to God should never be done.

exactly. i pointed out the bible says to honor it, hallow it, bless it, call on it. that should be enough to tell us how to not treat the name

Hey Praxeas kid -
I have compared my electronic BDB lexicon with my hard bound Gesenius. The Gesenius wins hands down. However, over the years I have come to respect your opinion on a number of issues. Therefore, I have just ordered my own hard copy of the BDB from Amazon.com. If it measures up to your suggested improvement over my Gesenius, thank you! If not, given the opportunity, I'll whip ya with both of them! LOLOL
