Right before Christmas we had a guest speaker at our church that I get that "money hungry" vibe from...yet he is a really good speaker so folks love him. He gets the crowd "hype" so to speak.
On this particular Sunday I was extra sad because the move of God was obvious...our children were pleading on the alter (10 and below) and I was cry out to God so deeply for thier souls. What an awesome time for these babies to recieve the best gift ever for Christmas.
In all that....the speaker grabbed a hold to the "excited emotions" in the room and asked for a $500 offering. I was sad. Instead of calling on the elders/parents to come and work with the children, he asked for money.
On the up side I know of one teen that recieved the Holy Ghost that day. But imagine what it would have been like if the attention was turned to the souls on the altar, and not the money in my checking account.

He asked for a $500 offering for his own pocket?

No, I doubt it. I dont think ministers get the whole offering, but I think they get a % of it. Not in ministry so I dont know. But knowing the pastor of the church I attend he does NOT get the whole offering.

Evangelists have to settle often for a pre-determined fee before coming usually

Makes sense. When I went to a smaller church, I can recall sometimes taking a "special" offering for the speaker. I assumed that would be thier "pay". I guess it can work out either way.

Re: A Letter from Jaunita Bynum Ministries
Most OP's have no idea how this fleecing of the flock works. In OP's It is found mostly in the Black churches. (this is not to be considered a racist statement, it is simply factual where I have had 20+ years of ministry experience) In most cases the speaker has a prearranged pay-out percentage i.e. 40/60, or 50/50 split. This is in addition to his "speakers offering" that comes from the main offering. (The % split is usually of the offering the speaker takes at the close of his/her message.)
As an example, I was in a Council (District Conference) Meeting where we took up $7000.00 in the general offering, the speaker received $2500.00 for his speakers offering out of the general offering. At the end of his message, however, he took up a "seed" offering of $12,000.00 which he had an agreement that he would get 65% ($7800.00) of for a total "speaker" net of $10,300.00.
In my opinion this is prostituting the Gospel and robbing God's people in the name of "prosperity." God is not pleased and I have and will oppose it.

I agree. And it seems you are always made to feel "guilty" when you don't participate...."there are at least 10 of you that can give $200 and God knows....I wouldn't hold that money if I were you cuz it will be cursed. Your blessing is in your giving! If you give it God will turn it around!!"

Re: A Letter from Jaunita Bynum Ministries
I must say I am very pleased to read all the posts rejecting this heresy.

I think he posts here from time to time - and he did seem sympathetic to the Tulsa crowd...
