Wow! Learning some interesting and downright sheer amazing things on this thread. And some not so amazing too of course.

Saome things come as no surprise.

My kids think I had a boring life with a TV (when we had one) that only changed channels when someone got up to do it, no microwave, no cable TV, no game systems, no videotapes, no CD's, no computer or internet, and they are amazed that we played outside and actually had fun!!!

FERD,
my LEG hurts just reading this story!
Some how picturing an 18 thing BOUNCING while being stuck in some poor kids make my toes curl.

His trauma,

Detention serving was only done on Tuesdays for 45 minutes. Since I didn't live far and walked home.....that's exactly what I did!

I once was escorted to the principal's office after school to ensure I would be in detention. So every Tuesday, I went home after lunch....LOL!

My mom was in nursing school and was gone everyday from 7:30am-4pm. There was no way to get in touch with her other than by mail.

egads when I think of the things we survived. it is a wonder I didnt die of tetnus.

we had this great old barn on the farm where I grew up. the roof was tin and we would go to the top and slide down! the thing was totaly rusted so you always came home with cuts.

Every time, mom would fuss at me "youve been on that barn again havent you!" I never figured out how she knew! well now I know, my seat of my pants were full of RUST!

Outside was life.

Even if there was no kids around, there was Maggie.

Maggie was a full size standard poodle. She was always loose, never leashed or tied up.
You could not hit a tennis ball far enough that Maggie could NOT get it on 1-2 BOUNCEs.
She brought that slobber-soaked ball back and dropped it on the insteps of your foot.
She never wore out.
She was always available, especially when your friends were away at their grandma's or on a family vacation to the shore.

you are sooooo lucky! I rode to school with my aunt who was also my 4th grade teacher. my school was so small, it was K-12 in one campus.

if I got in trouble, I got it all the way home, then Aunt Rose would call my dad, then I got it at home, then if I went to my Grand Parents, I got it there as he was a retired Principle.

I got in trouble a lot but got away with NOTHING!

We had one on the farm I grew up at. We'd climb the tree and step on the top, slide down and do it again.

Except me. I was 7 or 8, and the older kids wouldn't let me. And I was scared of heights.

But one day, I got brave. They said that if I did it once, i'd love it. So I climbed up, sat down, and slid......WHEEEEEEEEE..AHHHHHHHHHH.........

Yeah, it wasn't pleasant. My behind was hurting really bad!

My underpants were torn and I was bleeding. My mom inspected the area and I about got another split back there where none was intended.

On my left cheek, a nail that was sticking out sliced into my backside. I remember going to the ER for a shot, that was also placed back there.

Needless to say, I never had the desire to climb up there again. LOL!
