The SCOTUS needs to send a shot across the bow and nip this executive order nonsense in the bud. The President cannot use an executive order to alter the 2nd Amendment. And if he tries, the SCOTUS bears the responsibility to put him in check.
My two cents is this was a warning from the WH to Congress to act substantially. He wants assault weapons banned and the gun show loophole closed. If Congress doesn't do both of those things, he will try to issue an executive order.
However, if he does, I believe it will be short-lived and the courts will knock it down. Recent rulings by Fed courts in '08 and '10 have affirmed 2nd Amendment rights and have knocked down laws trying to place limits on it.
