My "word" to Rev. Dan Scott some six years ago, was that God was giving him a green light! I didn't know for what, but I felt it very strongly!

Three years later, he moves back to Nashville, and a few months ago was voted in as senior pastor of Christ Church!

A quandary!
Yes! It is totally up to the recipient to decide weather the word applies or not--no matter how sincere, or how convinced the person delivering the word is.

It is still up to the one receiving the word to judge!

Re: When God speaks

I believe the key is humility.

The bible says we see through a glass darkly and there is always the possibility of being wrong.

I really feel when giving a word to someone the phrase "thus saith the Lord" should be avoided and the one giving the word should say "I feel God is saying this and does it mean anything to you?

That way if the one giving the word is right great-if not, then it is less embarrassing.

Using a 'word' should confirm something God is already dealing with you or spoken to you about.

Look for confirmation-

Is it possible that the speaking you "hear" (I guess it's an internal voice, not audible, is that correct?) is not literally God speaking specific things to you, but rather your own thought process at work, making connections and conclusions, generating ideas, hunches, etc.?

If it's out of the blue (not something God was dealing with me about), but it lines up with Scripture, then what? Does it matter who got the message and passed it on to me? If it was a Pentecostal preacher, does that lend any weight to it? Should I ask for credentials, check the track record?

Personally I agree with you, but at the same time we must not fall into the category of "despising prophecy" either - but overall I am more in line with what you have said.
