We followed it's blood trail for hours, and over a lot of territory, but we never found it.
He is broken-hearted for the injured deer, and for the loss of the jerky he would have received from it.
Tell Seth that it happens to the best of hunters. We've all lost the "trail" a time or two. There will be better days ahead and as to feeling bad that's good for it shows he has the right attitude.

Starting yesterday morning, the woods and fields around us are speckled with blaze orange. With all the gunshots echoing (sometimes through the night!) and all the deer on the backs of pickups, it amazes me that any deer survive this, yet it is a sure thing that the day after rifle season is over, there will be herds in the field behind our house -again.

My son said there's a over abundance of deer at this time. Didn't they raise the limit you can shoot because of that?

I'm not sure about this year, but for the last couple you could "earn a buck", meaning for every doe you shot, you were allowed to shoot another buck -of course this varied county to county. My father-in-law hasn't gone a year were he hasn't shot at least 6 total, but usually averages 8 or 9.
I enjoy eating deer, but don't care to hunt it... even got a place to hunt that's loaded... the neighbor told me that he had a 1/2 section of rye and stopped counting deer at 110 on his rye field one day...
I have no pics, as LR has my camera to use while I'm not able to hunt, but I'll post them early next week.
We went hunting yesterday and today. I didn't shoot anything, and yesterday, didn't even see a deer all day long. LR got a doe and her cousin got a buck...a 3 pointer, otherwise known as a 'circle buck'...LOL!
Today, LR shot a 7 pointer, and while I saw four deer, none of them were close enough for a shot.
My son went yesterday and saw a couple deer, including a buck, but he couldn't shoot the buck because he has to shoot a doe first. But he did get to tag LR's doe to get his earn-a-buck sticker, so he's good to go now!! I have my earn-a-buck from last year.
I won't be hunting until Thursday, as I have school and clinicals, but my son is going on Tuesday and Wednesday, and I hope he shoots a big one!!
LR tells the stories better than I can, so stay tuned to what she'll have to say.
Pics to follow next week!!

RandyWayne, it's my understanding (as is LR's), that the earn-a-buck is a one-time deal, meaning you can shoot as many does as you want, but only one buck and only after a doe is shot. However, because LR also bow hunts, she can get a buck that way as well as with a gun. Can you clarify this for us? We are in unit 65B, if you need that info.

I'll let LR tell the stories, but here are the pics.
This is me with my doe that I shot on Thursday. Sorry about the mess, but it wasn't as clean of a kill as I'd have liked. LR had to finish her off for me.
This is LR with her doe on the first Saturday.
And this is LR with her buck, I think she got him Sunday.
And there is one of my son, but I need to edit out the deer hanging in the background without skin on them. It's a bit gross....LOL!
I thought I had a pic editor, but I don't, so I'll have LR do it for me.
