Don't knock it til ya try it. Grits is just another form of ground up corn anyway, so there are literally many many ways of making it. I am sure the way y'all make it in the south is good too. Well, I may be wrong on it being corn. Never really looked it up, to be honest with you.

You pretty much have it right.
It is ground hominy.
Hominy is corn that has been soaked (in something like lye) and the husks removed.

I am having serious problems reading thread titles today. Even though I KNOW what this thread title says-- every time I look at it, I am seeing "Do you like girls" 
Time to make the appointment to have my eyes checked...

It seems that in the South grits are used more as a side dish, where we just eat them as a breakfast cereal.

didn't read the whole thread but what is your preference. INstant or the slow cooked grits? I like them both but I can tell a difference.
Also do you cook
them with water or milk?
