I've said similar things, at times. I think those who do not hold the traditional UPC values and have no intention of following it's creeds, should do the honest thing and leave.

But there's another point to consider....there are those who feel as though the organization they've given their life to is going through a stage in which control is being ripped from those who are reasonable, into the hands of extremists. They may feel these trends will eventually change and they don't want to leave just because of a "phase."

But I'll admit, I was frustrated with the phonies who signed an oath they had not intention of obeying or honoring, in fact, mocking it and speaking outwardly against it, just for political reasons.

I agree that if you sign the affirmation statement you should keep your word. Honesty is important, and ministers are supposed to have a good reputation both "within and without." I would think that honesty would be essential to maintaining a good reputation.

That said, I don't really see participating in or orchestrating a witch hunt as illustrating good character either. I know there are people who look through facebook pages, for instance, and "report" on what they find. That's shameful.

True story....I once hosted a Youth Conference in my part of the world and it was well attended. Three great nights. Several girls from our church were sitting on the front tow one night and they "gently applied products to their facial area" shall we say? So one night, it was quite a tearful ending to the service and one of the local pastor went through and collected their Kleenex (I'm not lying) and later made an appointment to come to my office and meet with me. He laid the Kleenex down on my desk, which was stained with "facial products" and demanded an explanation.

And people wonder why I left.

I agree with Melody on this one. This is one of the reasons I left the UPC.

The "Preacher's Union" had become more important than evangelizing the world.

Cracked me up when a guy in a city of 50,000 who had 50 people in his church could keep any other UPC preacher who wanted to start a church out of the city by complaining to the District Board.

Or, if a UPC preacher wanted to preach for a non-UPC Apostolic preacher in the same town, he had to get permission from the residing UPC pastor, and the pastor could deny him.

WAYYYYYYYYYYY too much power there, folks.

But, I agree with Melody.....if you sign up for the club, you gotta play by the rules, no matter how outlandish they may be.

Which is why I quit the club.

But let's face it, Michael, most guys know, if they leave, they'll lose everything, most likely. They'll be beaten to death by district boards, even general boards. It's a scary thing to do. I had a very broken and well-known pastor say to me on the phone, "I wish I could do what you're doing." I was aggravated with him and felt sorry for him at the same time.

But..what if you are neck deep with UPCI family and friends, and you want to change it from the inside? Is civil disobedience warranted if you think the org is stuck in a rut?

Not of works, what do they have then? If they have not integrity, they have nothing anyway.

I don't disagree. But for me, there's a difference between guys who are giving the system and its ideals "the finger" (sorry, don't know how else to say it) and refuse to leave, and guys that feel trapped, that feel like things will change and are trying to hold out.

I also know that it's possible to get a license without signing the affirmation statement. I did. I wrote a letter explaining why I couldn't and wouldn't sign it. I got my card soon thereafter.

But alas, I'd already made my decision and mailed it back.

But the point is, maybe some refuse to sign, say they want to stay, and are granted space to stay.
