Miss Brat and Felicity,

Good posts, but do you think the pastor's wife should be called Pastor too?

If she's been given that office or title, then sure if she herself is comfortable with it.

Our Seniors Pastor is a woman and my husband occasionally calls her and recognizes her as Pastor Mary.

Most of the time she gets "Mary" and most people call her by her given name, but occasionally she's recognized for the office she fills and she is recognized and called "pastor" but only in the capacity of the responsibility she fills as the one who is looking after the seniors.

The thread actually asks if she is "entitled to call herself Pastor"....that's different from others calling her Pastor ________.

So...I don't think its wrong to call the pastor's wife "pastor", if she's a pastor. If a woman introduced herself to me as "Pastor ______", then I would feel obligated to call her that, because common courtesy says that you address folks in the manner in which they introduce themselves to you, unless they give you permission to do otherwise. However, if I later found out that she wasn't actually a pastor, I would inwardly object. I doubt I would do otherwise just to make a point.

I do not think a pastor's wife is "entitled" to call herself Pastor simply because her husband is a pastor, and without any other qualification. I would question her character if she demanded that saints address her in such a manner.

This is completely theoretical on my part, because I've never attended a church with a female pastor or female associate pastor.

What others choose to call her and what she chooses to call herself are two different things. When others choose to bestow respectful titles or labels, that speaks well of that person. When a person chooses to bestow lofty titles or labels upon oneself, that [often] speaks ill of that person. Or maybe just sometimes.

So whether its alright for a pastor's wife to be called "pastor" is one question...whether its alright for her to call herself that is another, and it would depend on what her husband and the church thinks about it. Quite frankly, I don't think it is okay, unless both her pastor(husband) and her church give her permission to do so. Or at the very least, I think its in bad taste.

That's what I think too - just because she's the pastor's wife doesn't automatically entitle her to be considered a pastor.

I personally don't know anyone that actually did that, but the frame of mind was present.

Let me ask this...

I could see someone earning this title by working hard at home and at church.. but are they just entitled to it by being married to the Pastor?

Does your Pastor's Wife call herself Pastor?
No, and no.
