according to Andrea Mitchell on MSNBC's Morning Joe program this morning. The rumor (and that's all it is right now) is that Colin Powell will officially endorse Barack Obama for President. I'd read rumblings online for a while, but didn't really expect him to jump in.
I'm not sure what kind of affect his endorsement would have. As a general rule, I don't usually believe endorsements have much sway at all, but there aren't many people in this country anymore who are as widely respected as Colin Powell. Given Colin Powell's reputation and the amount of respect he has around the country, this could be a factor for those voters who don't trust Obama in foreign policy matters.
Maybe the Obama'ites have seen the tightening in the latest polls and are getting nervous??
We shall see what happens...

for a guy voting for a third party Mike you sure sound like an Obama supporter.
That has been bugging me for a while.
Just cant shake that feeling bro.
Well I guess get out your bug spray is the only advice I can give you. I don't really feel the need to defend my word to you. I guess you'll have to keep shaking.
I've said I'm voting for Bob Barr and that's what I intend to do regardless of how you feel about it.

I am like you, I don't think endorsements really make a big difference. I just saw Martin Sheen this morning and some other celebrities on Morning Joe and it just humors me that these Hollywood snobs think they are so important that a significant nmumber of people would actually vote based on what they say and do.

Might as well vote for BO then.

I completely agree. You, I or anyone else doesn't need an adultering, dope addicted, drunken celebrity telling us who'll be best to run the most powerful country in the world. I've never understood why the Hollywood crowd feels the need to offer advice on government when they can't keep their ownselves straight. Even if I agreed with their choice, their endorsement wouldn't add any validity to the candidate.
The reason I think Colin Powell would be interesting is because of the demographic he might effect. Barack Obama has never been able to close the sale with suburban and rural white males. He couldn't in the democratic primary and hasn't, IMO, up to this point. I think Colin Powell might directly effect that demographic given the amount of repsect and credability he has around the country.
It'll be interesting to see if he povides any kind of detectable bump for Obama. I think the effect will probably be insignificant, but it'll be interesting to watch. According to this article, the McCain campaign doesn't sound happy.

Ferd, there is definitely a very specific, consistent, and traditional flow of the political leanings of a forum like this. I think that going upstream against that flow can be perceived as supporting BO. I can assure you that it is very possible to be fed up with the GOP and the games that you perceive them playing with the religious right and not be a BO or Democrat supporter.
I think that to compound it, there is something inside some of us that does enjoy going against the flow to begin with
