The immediate challenges your son will face include; loneliness, fear, "did I make the right decision" etc. These issues along with the normal process of becoming a US Marine will change him forever. Mostly for the better! When you do get a chance to talk to him, be encouraging and let him know how proud you are of him. Let him know that you understand the amount of courage it took to take this step. Speak to him like the man he is. Not the boy who left a few weeks ago.
When you see him at Graduation, do not be surprised if he doesn't want hug you as much or, if he wants to hurry and get back to his Platoon. Part of the change in him will be the dependence he has on his fellow Marines. This is vital to his survival in general and God forbid - in combat. Do not be offended. This is normal.
Of course he may have completely different reactions than those I described. And, you're his mother....you know him better than anyone!
Overall, I think you will be very impressed with the sharp, focused, disciplined man you see.
Your son is doing an honorable thing! My prayer is for your peace and understanding, and for him to allow the Love of God to shine through him to his comrades!
