The placenta acts as a maternal-fetal exchange system. Nutrients from the mother's blood pass across the placenta to the fetal blood. Waste products in the fetal blood pass across the placenta to the mother's blood. Occasionally, some blood cells also cross, usually during delivery when the placenta begins to separate from the uterus. If the mother and infant have different blood types, this can cause several problems. Rh incompatibility may cause the Rh- mother to have problems carrying future RH+ pregnancies to term. ABO incompatibilities can cause jaundice in the newborn so severe that a blood transfusion is required for the infant.
