The Greek word for "edification" has the following meanings:
- (the act of) building, building up
- metaph. edifying, edification
- the act of one who promotes another's growth in Christian wisdom, piety, happiness, holiness
- a building (i.e. the thing built, edifice)
The Greek word is used four times in
1 Corinthians 14 (14:3, 14:5, 14:12, and 14:26); see also how it is used in
1 Corinthians 3:9; it is used elsewhere in the New Testament as well.
