This Merton guy is pretty sharp for an 81 year old.

"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."

I was in the UPC for 19 years. I was fortunate in that I had no extended family in the church except my mother-in-law and she was marginal. We baptized her in ourselves so she followed us in.
I was extremely careful when I wanted to leave. We were pastoring at the time and I stayed for four years without believing it until my husband was ready to make the move. I will never regret how I handled that. I didn't break any standards except for ones that were pretty acceptable to break. I talked to my husband about my feelings but I did not scream or yell or demand we leave. In fact, I was ready to stay forever in respect to my husband's wishes and ust work inside the denomination to try and help people best I could.
I didn't feel that being in or out was what mattered but that I was free in my own mind to think and feel and be who I was. That's what really counts.
