This Summer we will be embarking on a 6 month strategic plan for discipleship. We will be using the Life Transformation Group idea. I am trying to recapture the heart of NT discipleship/spiritual formation, something that I see lacking in our church community.
I would say the larger church but then Rford would accuse me of generalizing. So I will stick with what I know, our own local church.
Here is a summary:
A Life Transformation Group is a way of
obeying Jesus’ command to make and
multiply disciples without relying on gifted
leaders.
Two or three people who desire
to grow in their walk with God can hear from God
through prayer and scripture reading.
They can encourage and support one
another in obeying what they hear from
God.
They can also agree in prayer for
salvation of loved ones.
A Life Transformation Group typically
meets once a week for an hour. It is gender
specific (not co-ed), requires no curriculum
or special training, and dozen’t
need a leader. Its members mainly do
three things:
1. Confess sin to one another in mutual
accountability
2. Read scripture (10-15 Chapters a week)
3. Pray for people desperately needing
Jesus.
I will be asking for a 6 month commitment from each member of our church to be involved.
I have come to the realization that Jesus didn't ask us (me) to build a church, but to make disciples. So I am going back to the roots of discipleship and equipping our saints with easy, reproducible model that will help them grow in this area. My goal is to of course help people grow in their relationship with God, but also to seek out potential leaders who will then be groomed to become small group leaders. This will impact our vision, church and ultimately our community.
