I can't imagine being without for 4 weeks!!!! Goodness!

My husband was telling me today, as I was wrong earlier, our house would withstand a large hurricane. It's been through a CAT 5. He said the house is built for it. The sub-floor is laid at a diagonal and then oak flooring on that. I can't remember how he said the walls were built. When he gets into the particulars about lumber I stop listening. lol

He did say we could lose our roof, but the house would stand. That is good to know. He said regardless, anything over a CAT 1, we are out of here. lol

Did you see on Channel 26 in Houston they have a link on their website to post your storm pictures? Thought you might want to send some to them.

Hope you get settled soon! Sorry for the horrible set back!
If anyone is close to Jim Griffin and his family - they are without electricity, water, and they said it is difficult to get any groceries. I think they need a hand if anyone can reach them...Dan, BP?

Oh...Rhoni thanks for posting this. If you talk to him again, please let him know that my apartment is still open and available if they can get out this way. I have more than enough groceries right now, I wish I could get them to them somehow.

Dan, I really hope you can do something for them, I know he was worried about some health concerns that really require electricity to deal with properly.

Re: Hike away from Ike?

Unless you have been in this situation it is hard for folks to understand you can't go out hardly at all, because without electricity you can't pump gas. Generators run on gas.

Lines are extremely long in the very few places that have electricity or a generator to run their pumps.

The city sent out bulldozers to shove the tree debris off the road.

My husbands job is wanting him to run to Houston to check on his terminals. They don't understand the gas shortage and curfews. He could get there but can he find gas to get home? Can he get home before curfew? If not, $500.00 fine.

So much to do here.

I am thankful there has been a cool front blow in, it is a life saver. Actually, slept under the covers last night with just the windows open and no fan.

Re: Hike away from Ike?

Never been through a Hurricane, don't ever want to go through one, & it amazes me to see the force in one of those storms & it's destructive power that it brings.

Sad to hear of all of the difficulties this storm brought, but am thankful it wasn't much worse!

Praying for all involved.

Esther,
I do know how this feels and it's not fun - at all!! I think the only thing I really can look back on is how the communities and people come together and help each other. If there is ever anything to draw from tragedy, it would be that.

Still praying for you during the upcoming strenuous days ahead!!!

My heart goes out to you and everyone that is going through this, I wish there was something I could do to help, but I will be praying!

I hope this is all short very short term event.

Re: Hike away from Ike?

Whew! What a week! It has been quite an experience waiting for hours in lines for gas, food, water and ice. Many of the gas stations that have opened only excepted cash and have limited the amount of gas you purchased. Yesterday, I went to three different filling stations trying to get gas. I waited two hours at one location only to be told they had sold out.

This morning, I woke up early and left at 6 after curfew to find some gas and ice. I went to one station and was able to purchase 10 in gas, but I stumbled upon a Valero on the way home which just got power again and was able to fill up my tank. When I arrived home, I walked in my front door and realized my power was turned on! Thank God!

Please pray for the elderly during this time. Many just haven't been able to jockey around for water, food and ice and they have suffered so much.

Sorry for all of your inconveniences! We are praying!!!! Keep us posted.

I heard they were bringing in a Cruise ship to house some of the people in Galveston. I thought that was a great idea!!
