Re: LA District Campmeeting - Live Webcast

Pretty much the same old same old ...

I get a little weary when I think back on my 36 years of attending UPC campmeeting, conference and general conference services all over this country.

It's like 35 years of pep rallies .... and the actual game never arrives.

Reddman,

Thanks for posting your thoughts. If something is spoken publicly from a pulpit or published in a book it should be open for public discussion in a constructvie manner.

I have not seen anyone making disparaging personal comments about the speaker, rather they are discussing the content of his sermon.

Discussions like this are the reason for this forum. There is no doubt in my mind the sincerity of Scott Graham. While I don't know him I know his sister and she is a wonderful person who speaks highly of her brother.

That does not negate the fact that based on some of the content of the sermon that was related here it falls into the "hold the fort" catagory of sermon that I contend dominates the UPC and old time Oneness Pentecost.

"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.

"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.

"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."

For what it's worth...

I think preaching about standards have no place at a Campmeeting or National meeting...

#1 Standards shouldn't be PREACHED, they should be taught
#2 Everyone's standards are different

ahh. I had searched to see if they would be broadcasting it like they did last year and I guess they are... too bad I missed last night's preaching. I love Bro. Scott Graham's preaching. He was at our youth camp a couple of years ago and he was great! God bless him.

I did not hear the message but heard it discussed on a coupe of forums it was getting high ratings. I do believe holiness standards should be preached at meetings.

He was exhorting the younger generation to contend for the faith that was once delivered to their fathers. He did note that the faith of their fathers was founded on scripture.

At times it did sound like a pep rally, but I don't think that was his point.

Re: LA District Campmeeting - Live Webcast

I have heard Bro. Scott preach several times. He preached the night services at Texas camp all 4 nights. I was excited to hear that he was coming so I went to the 2 services I could make. Teusday night (night 1) of camp was great, they had 45 minutes of music/preliminary and they got straight to the preaching. It was a great message about how God is so awesome and we forget sometimes. (of course is was better than what I just made it sound like, but the fact remains, it gave glory to God.).

Then Thursday night I got off work, had some stuff to do and got there late hoping I hadn't missed the preaching. Infact I didn't, I got there just in time for the 25 minute offering of "who'll give a 1,000 dollars? thanks Bro. so and so" "now who'll give 500 dollars" on and on , 25 minutes is not an exaggeration. Then the Choir sang some songs, a little "jukey" and hypish (2 word I made up!) but I was able to praise God without being to distracted.

Finally the preaching, yay, I was excited. Someone comes and puts stones around the pulpit, "neat I thought" I like props , sometimes they help me remember good messages with ease. Then he started preaching the same exact message that he preached at LA camp last night. That's no surprise that he preached that at LA to me. I know most the big names do that exact thing. As hard as I tried to have a good spirit and receive anything that God might be trying to show me, I felt uneasy and disagreed with quite a bit, but not being sure why. I've began searching since that time for answers.

I did not watch the message last night, but my g/f lives in LA and she went. Only to hear the same message and be disappointed like I was.

The stone I wished he would preached about would be

I Peter 2:4
4To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,
5Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
6Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.
7Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
8And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.

That's my story and my 2 cents

Re: LA District Campmeeting - Live Webcast

It is that Stone that makes all stumble TYK ...

I once preached a message from various points of views of various landmark stones in Scripture ... based on the idea of "If these Stones Could Cry out" ...

They spoke from the first person narrative.

To some Scripture points to Acts 2:38 and their pet doctrines ... including standards and "heritage" ...

I believe ... and taught that each of these stones point to Jesus Christ including Golgotha and the stone rolled away at the tomb... they point to the Rock who is higher than I.

Lastly, no ... campmeetings are not a place to usurp a pastor's authority on how he teaches standards.
