Space Shuttle Re-entry - Memphis

Maybe I'll see the Discovery as it goes by Memphis today!

Shuttle expected to pass over Tupelo today

Daily Journal

Staff and wire reports

TUPELO - Space Shuttle Discovery is scheduled to fly over Tupelo about 11:50 a.m. and it's likely to cause at least one sonic boom.

A NASA map of its flight path shows an opportunity for people from Memphis to Tupelo to take in the event.
NASA says it's hard to predict if anybody will see it, but millions of people will be able to hear the double sonic boom along the shuttle's path.

Mother Nature won't be a problem. The skies should be clear and sunny, according to AccuWeather.com.

June Malone at NASA confirmed the shuttle will be coming across Northeast Mississippi and, with good weather, folks may be able to see it as it flies at a northwest-to-southeast angle toward Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Weather permitting, Discovery will fire its engines to de-orbit about 11 a.m. CST today. Landing would happen an hour later.

The orbiter will come across southwestern Canada toward the United States, flying southeast over Montana, the Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia into Florida.

Why daylight? It's easier than in the dark, says Wayne Hale, Space Shuttle program manager.

I bet - - - we went out on the top floor of our parking garage (6th floor).

It was still 44,000 ft. when we saw it.

Not sure why it was so cool, but it was. Probably the excitement that my son had - - he's nuts over anything that flies!

He's actually going back to finish flight school! That'll work!

Because it's something that doesn't happen everyday. I think anytime you get to see something like that out of the norm it is exciting.
