Holes in my yard?????

At one time we had a garden. Well, we had an electric fence around our garden to keep animals away. We noticed a hole that appeared right in the middle of the green beans. Sure enough it was a ground hog (gopher family). My husband put lighter fluid down that hole and set it on fire. We never had a problem with those gophers again!

I was taking trash out and I stepped in a spot that the dirt under my feet sank with me. It was the strangest thing.

It went down 6/8 inches. Then I noticed what at first I thought was anthills, but no ants.

The holes are close together and the dirt underneath them is very loose. When you walk on it you can feel it give ....It is in an area of about 6 or 8 foot square.

Does anyone know what kind of animal it could be?

We discovered the problem.

First the soft place and the holes ended up being unrelated.

The soft place seems to be a rotting tree root under there. I have a massive maple in my front yard.

The holes were not really big enough for gophers or moles. But there are tons of them. It looked like someone took a broomstick and went around and rammed the broomstick in the ground over and over.

It was a squirrel!!! I guess he is looking for hidden bounty. I saw him the other day, he would dig, then he would run to another spot and dig some more...and so on, and so on, and so on He has a hole dug every 6 inches or so.. hehehe

He looked desperate.. Kind of like I do when I forget where I placed something!!!

One more thing. Do you live in an area where there are snakes?
You better fill the holes as they may move in!
