I'm not old enough to have any firsthand knowledge of whether or not this controversy existed regarding radio broadcasts. However, you got me thinking about it, and I was pondering reasons that there might not have been as many objections.
One thought that I had was that radio is less identifiable. You might hear a preacher's message on radio, but unless you listened all the way to the end of the program or to an intro right after a commercial break, you might never even know what church you were listening to. Also, you would not really know what was going on in an altar or worship service (even if crazy or unusual things were going on) just by listening over the radio because the sound of the audience just runs together.
Because OP have a very distinct look, when people see a service on TV with people that "look like us", they are going to identify what they see with those of us in other churches that have the same look. This was a non-issue with radio, and that may be a reason for the increased concern regarding TV service broadcasts.
