Tragedy at Cars for Kids Show

Drag racer kills four bystanders at show

SELMER, TN - Four people are reported dead after a vehicle drag racing at a car show in Tennessee lost control and spun into a crowd of bystanders.

Authorities say up to 15 other people were hurt.

Investigators are trying to determine what caused the vehicle to careen into the crowd at the Cars for Kids charity event in Selmer, located about 80 miles east of Memphis.

One witness says the vehicle started burning off its tires, then began to fishtail and slammed into a light pole before spinning around into the audience.

The Selmer police chief says, "Bodies were flying into the air when it happened."

A Tennessee Highway Patrol spokesman says the vehicle is described as a drag racing car, but he didn't have more details yet about the vehicle.

This is the town right nextdoor to mine. This would be horrible anywhere but it is worsened by the fact that we live in such a small town. Please pray for these families. My children's father and stepmom are EMT's and she was called in to work, as they need as many people as possible at the hospital. She said the last count she heard was six to eight dead and between 20 to 30 injured.

Tam--Russell called me right after this happened. He said there were bodies and blood everywhere. He got a chance to pray with some of the families, but he was really shook up. He doesn't think any of the ones killed were kids, but he wasn't sure. He said there were ambulances there from Madison, Hardeman, and several other counties. What a mess and SO sad, especially with all those kids watching the parade!!

Tiffany has been to the hospital and she said that four of the ones that were DOA were 19-20 years old. They brought in ambulances from Madison, Hardeman, Chester, Hardin, and Alcorn. She said there were helicopters everywhere flying them to several different hospitals also.

She said it was complete chaos at the hospital. I cannot imagine the grief, but I also can't imagine what the man who was driving the car is going through right now.

Did Tiff know any of the young people who were killed? I wonder if they were from McNairy County?

We don't have names yet. They wouldn't release any until all families have been contacted. She hasn't got to talk to Sonia since she actually got to the hospital. She just got off the phone with Kenny and Sonia is still there and it's been four hours.

One of the EMT ladies from McNairy actually saw it happen and she said bodies just went flying through the air. I actually thought about going and Tiff said that she wanted to take Ashton. I'm so glad that we weren't there!

Seriously, I know someone who may have been there, but I am not close to that person - so I don't know anyone to call to find out about this. We should pray for the families. So sorry to hear this terrible news.

There is raw video footage of the actual crash on www.wmctv.com where someone who was shooting a video for themselves let them air theirs. It was a pretty horrific accident. The people in my community are still in shock over it.
