Aren't those considered to be idols? I have never seen them in Apostolic churches, I have seen wall sized photos of the pastor and his wife, but never a graven image.

This as somewhat correct regarding spiritual separation but the loss of protection is a scary concept.

I suppose one who is responsible for establishing that to which the expected response is obedience (I didn't want to say "rules"), could pretty much expect anything he/she said, did, or even believed to result in an obedient response among those who call him/her their leader. Furthermore, this individual could also say that protection, blessing, etc. is a result of obeying his every whim, the consequences of disobedience of course is the loss of that protection.

How can we give someone that level of power in our lives??

I don't believe that mere disobedience brings a loss of protection. If God is more of a Father than our earthly one, while He may chastise us for disobedience, I don't believe His protection is taken away anymore than we wouldn't protect our own children just because they are disobedient.

I agree, except when loss of protection would be a natural consequence of sin.
