Buying a Car.

Yesturday, I went to look at a Chevy Impala. The sticker price was $21,000.00, I offered 14,000.00. Does anyone think that my offer was unreasonable? Are there any members here that got an excellent deal on a car that you purchased? Please share.

Go to Edmunds.com to do your research. They have a lot of good info on negotiating etc. Usually, 3% over dealers invoice (which you have the right to see) is considered a good deal.

Was this new our used?

New, it was very unreasonable. If you can only afford 14000 you need to look at a Cobalt or a Colorado. Dealer markup is large on Yukons and Silverados. US Car manufacters have a 5 month inventory. And the 2008 are scheduled to roll in this month.

I've heard of others getting an excellent deal, up to $10,000.00 off the purchase of the car they bought. My Step-Dad bought a $38,000.00 Buick Lucerne for $29,000.00. So why would my offer be unreasonable BOOMM?

Here are a few reasons. The Buick Lucerne is overpriced to start with and since it's price is up in stater Lexus territory GM has been trying to goose it's sales with huge rebates and dealer incentives. Obviously the factory has more dollars to play with in rebates on a car that lists for twice the one you are looking at. I doubt rebates on an impala rarely go over $1500 and probably max out at $2000.

Plus look at the simple math. If the markup for a domestic product is roughly 10% then that Lucerne had about a $4000 margin for the dealer. Your impala would only have about a $2000 margin.

You are the kind of customer that drove me crazy when I was a sales manager because you are so far from reality you can't be worked with.

The reason I started at 14,000 was to see if the sales manager would go down on the price of that Impala. The 14,000 was not a price set in stone my friend.

You have to understand that your offer destroyed your credibility with him by being so ridiculous. You need to at least be rooted in reality.

The markup on a Lucerne is this large.

Not on Chevrolet.

I gave you a link to read and after seeing what insiders at the dealership have to say you appreciate some of them better.

Trust me that Mid September there will be massive sales. NOTHING is moving on dealer lots here.

There are some factors one needs to consider and know about before hand...

Is there a factory rebate included? Are there dealer incentives (cash incentives the dealer gets from the maker)....if you KNOW about those dealer incentives before hand you might be able to use it to negotiate...

How much of the money is going to be cash?

I agree. When we bought our Chevy Venture-- we paid $12,000 for it. It was a 1998 model. It was a one owner vehicle, low mileage and had been very well maintained. We bought it in 2002. New Chevy Ventures at the time were going for around $27,000. The "NEW" price wasn't worth it to me. We had most of the bells & whistles that were available in the new model... for less than half the price. The van still looks as just almost as good today as it did when we drove it off the lot. It gets about 28 MPG average... and has plenty of room for the entire family plus luggage.

The down side was that the engines this particular model should have been recalled due to faulty camshafts... and that I had to put a $2000 engine in my van 3 months after I bought it-- BUT... other than that, I've not had any trouble out of it. I guess it could have happened with any vehicle. (But realistically, a Camshaft should never break) Due to Chevy not standing behind something that should have been recalled (Numerous people with same complaint were found on the net) when this one goes to the junk heap-- I will NEVER purchase another Chevy. (Sorry for the vent, that just always comes out when I talk about this van purchase LOL)

We've also got a 1995 Ford Ranger that we paid $4000 for in 1998. It still runs like a new truck... and we've never had to do anything to it other than regular maintenance.
