Obama offered him the position.

He hasnt accepted it yet (although I'm guessing he probably will).

They're reporting that it's been offered and accepted.

On the foxnews.com page?
I didnt see that.

All I saw was: "Obama took his first step in building his team on Wednesday when he offered Illinois Rep. Rahm Emanuel the job of White House Chief of Staff, FOX News confirmed."

Just read on Wikipedia that his father was part of a militant Zionist group and his wife is an orthodox Jew. Interesting..

Chief of Staff is not a biggie to me. I wanna see who he makes Treasury Secretary, Secy of State, Natl Sec Advisor, Secy of Defense, and Attorney General.

The Chief of Staff usually has influence on those decisions doesn't he? He's the gatekeeper.

But you're right, in the grander scheme of things the other appointments are more important.

I'll keep u updated.

More of a gatekeeper on a day to day basis, not so much when it comes to the initial cabinet appointments. Sure, the COS's opinions will be taken into account somewhat, but usually the transition team is the one who has the greatest influence on who a president will choose. The transition team comes up with a group of names, takes care of the vetting/background checking, and makes final recommendations to the president-elect.

After the administration is in full swing, the COS will really be the gatekeeper on , as far as overseeing the actions of the White House staff, managing the President's schedule, and deciding who is allowed to meet with the President on a daily basis.

I agree. COS is the position given much more to the administerial side of running the White House. It's an interesting choice because by all accounts Emmanuel has a good grasp on moving legislation through Capital Hill, and knowing where the votes are. It's an ok choice by me.

The much more interesting one's are coming. Where does Colin Powell fit? Will Paul Voker or Bob Rubin be asked to be Treasury? Both would be good choices.

Republican Chuck Hagel is a very decent and knoweldgable man and would make a fine Secretary of Defense.

It'll be interesting to watch. Two or three Republicans in his cabinet, would be a start to setting the right tone for his administration.
