There is no question Sarah Palin boosted John McCain's numbers immediately after the Democrat Convention in Denver. The "Palin Effect" helped eliminate any post-convention bounce BO might have enjoyed.
But the McCain campaign made a tactical error. They kept Gov. Palin from speaking to the media. Then when the campaign caved to the whining of the mainstream press, they scehduled two interviews with Charles Gibson and Katie Couric. Bad call. Gibson and Couric, immersed in the East Coast media elite were given the chance to conduct interviews designed to embarrass Ms. Palin. Then the McCain campaign kept her away from the media for too long again. Gov. Palin became an object of ridicule.
Weekly SNL skits making fun, late night talk show monologue jokes, Hollywood award shows scoffing at her, non-stop news articles nit picking every little detail of her life took its toll. Its hard to shake a negative image once pop culture gets its hands on you and pours on the ridicule and degradation.
I've talked to people in the public square about the election and they will respond that their biggest concern about voting for McCain is Palin. Incredulous, I ask why. They respond wih something like "She scares me." or "She's not ready to be President." All the while I'm countering their arguments using their logic against them.
"Are you scared more by the fact Palin doesn't read the NY Tiimes and has been wearing expensive, borrowed clothes, or that Obama wants to 'spread the wealth', raise taxes in a down economy, has very questionable associations and alliances with some very dubious characters, etc.?" I point out the desparity between the argument she isn't qualified to be President as a VP candidate all the while Obama is even less qualified and is at the top of the ticket.
What the McCain campaign should have done was allow Ms. Palin to be interviewed by friendlier and fair news agencies and journalists. Local news anchors seem to be more objective these days than the national boys.
The character assassination of Sarah Palin has been effective. Yet she continues to smile, wow her audiences, and speak strongly and convincingly about the stark contrast between Obama and McCain. Add to that the economic tsunami that occured in late September and its amazing that some polls have McCain within the margin of error. Its still going to be a close call in the end, but not in spite of Sarah Palin, rather because of her.
Obama should he win will be a one term president or at least will lose his majority in Congress. The last two times the Democrats had the White House and majorities in Congress was under Clinton in '92 and within two years ahd been so liberal, lost both the House and Senate to the GOP. The other time was Carter in '76 with a majority in the House and a supermajority in the Senate. Well, we know how that turned out.

I was on record very soon after the pick...after I had done some looking into her...and I was saying then that it struck me as a strategic mistake.

What was, picking Palin or allowing her to go on with hostile journalists?
Palin was certainly a great pick. Mac did not have the GOP base which is more conservative than he is. Palin cemented him with conservatives. The Dems and their media pals saw that she had given Mac the push ahead he needed and they determined to marginalize her. Without Palin Mac wouldn't even be polling within the margin of error.
The strategic mistake was keeping her from really getting out there and being herself.

The Palin pick was no more necessary to cement the conservative vote than the selection of a black Democrat was necessary to cement the black vote in my opinion.

There's no doubt that she cemented his base, but I fully believe that Barack Obama himself would have cemented John McCain's base even if he had picked Mitt Romney. The base wouldn't have been as enthusiastic, but I think the core base would have still turned out on election day.
The problem with Palin is she's cost McCain Independents. The last poll I saw showed her as the leading reason for Independents NOT to vote for Mac and it had Obama up by 15% with Independents.

DB, I disagree with you on the reason for Sarah Palin's looking bad in the interviews with Gibson and Couric. I'm not going to defend either of them as not having a bias. All of us have certain biases and both of them will probably vote for Obama. I understand that.
But Sarah Palin answered questions horribly. That's no one's fault but Sarah Palin. Just for instance, when Couric asked her what newspapers/magainzes she read, instead of naming her hometown newspaper or an Alaskan newspaper, she acted scared and said something silly like oh, all of them. It was an easy question to answer truthfully. When she was continually asked about her foreign policy experience, instead of cedeing the issue and pointing to Barack Obama's lack of experience she had the silly retorts of "I live next door to Russia." Sarah Palin simply was NOT ready to face the media.
I think the key error for John McCain was picking someone who he'd only met once and someone who had no skills in dealing with the national press. The last 60 days aren't exactly the best time to have OJT.

Let's not forget the prayers of God's people who are praying for His Will and Way in
this election. Very soon time will tell the story and those who have prayed for God's
will and way, will be able to accept it as such. They will trust His decision because
they know He knows how to deliver the godly out of temptation. He will give them a
successful means of escape, whether it be economical or otherwise.
He delivered his people when the Romans came against the city of Jerusalem. Jesus
had told them when they saw Jerusalem compassed with armies to flee. If
you are on the rooftop, don't go back down into your house to get anything.
Don't go into Jerusalem, flee to the mountains. Those that believed and trusted in His
Words were saved. God can protect the godly in the midst of any given situation. I am
not trusting in man anyway. So whatever He allows I can trust HIM. And when it is all
said and done, I have never seen the righteous forsaken or His seed begging bread.
Can you say, "Not my will but Thine O, Lord, regarding this election? If not, why not!

Sis Falla, you remind me so much of my mother...and that is perhaps one of the greatest compliments I could ever pay anyone.
