Hmmm, I wonder DVD

Well, we are having Church in the House every other Wed night instead of having church in the church.

For the most part, these are moderated by church leaders with folks and families attending who have been in the local church for quite a while. Each week we rotate having Church in the House at various homes in our particular zip code.

The Pastor produces a high quality DVD each week with him presenting the concept/sermon/message for the discussion and theme of the various sessions done so from obviously what is his office.

The puzzling thing to me is that the PASTOR is making the assumption that EVERY person in the core membership of the church has a DVD player and a television (The concept of having a monitor only has gone the way of the YUGO).

Isn't this amazing especially in light of the David Bernard proclamation that the UPC is going the way of standards and holiness?

Man this is pretty peculiar.

I love Church in the House, but the bigger picture to me is pretty amazing because the Pastor (and District Super), is older than Bernard, but has pretty much the exact same philosophy.

Maybe they trust the integrity of the saints, that they can procure something (as long as it is not a television) to play a DVD. You can play a DVD on your computer and some pastors believe there is a difference between having a computer and having a tv.

Maybe the pastor just accepts the idea that everyone has a tv and is willing to come into the 20th century. Maybe even willing to come into the 21st century some day.

Mr. Ellis this post doesn't really deal with this thread. I just wanted to thank you for the link to the book that you sent me. I have only had time to read half of it this weekend, but I can tell I will want to read it many more times.

That is a pretty progressive idea for a fairly conservative UPC pastor. When they announced this from the pulpit or talked about how it would work when meeting with the leaders did the assumed method of viewing come up then?

Did he ask if everyone had a DVD player and "monitor" or did he just assume they all did?

I know a fairly conservative well known UPC preacher who is very much against the TV resolution that passed who when asked by some younger UPC pastors about five years ago what he thought about TV he said that ship had sailed and that battle was lost. That the saints had them and were not getting rid of them. I heard it from the mouth of one of the UPC pastors he was talking to.

Maybe your pastor feels the same way and just decided to use those TV's for some good!

I'm surprised. Even though lots of saints have tv >>>> it comes under don't ask don't tell.

Our church makes a video/dvd of every service/sermon.

Pretty peculiar?? Guess I don't get it then.... I thought pretty much EVERYONE in the UPC has done DVD or video for decades (except perhaps someone that could not afford it??).

The only question I was aware of was whether they all watched broadcast TV with the technology.

Me too, I don't really understand the point of the original post. Our church has been using the same format for 3 or 4 years now, it is very successful.

Why do you need to have TV to play a video or DVD? If a home happens not to have a "monitor" or computer screen the DVD could be played on, the group leaders have portable units that can be used.
