What is Your Favorite Abomination?

We have been taught that there is sin, but an even more serious level of sin is an abomination. Assuming that all abomination are equal before God (no white-black) here is a list of abominations that I found:

1. a proud look
2. a lying tongue
3. murderers (hands that shed innocent blood)
4. wicked imaginations
5. mischievousness
6. a false witness
7. one that sows discord among brethren
8. homosexuality
9. One who justifies the wicked
10. One who condemns the righteous
11. women who wear men's clothing
12. men who wear women's clothing
13. business people who skew the weights for measurement
14. holy sacrifice given by wicked people
15. a devious heart
16. one who won't listen to the law
17. arrogant people
18. bestiality
19. adulterers

These are all called abominations in the bible! We have a habit of glossing over the ones that we aren't passionate about, and focus on the one's we can use to judge others. With that in mind, which ones are your favorites?

I would say that no abomination should be our favorite... the question is just... wrong!

I know that the question is provocative, but I want people to think about the abominations that are just as wrong as the ones that we use to judge others.

When we think of abominations, we put a lot of weight behind the sins of homosexuality, beastiality, false witness and women wearing men's pants, but almost ignore some of the others that hit closer to home! I see what you mean, thanks for clarifying... we prefer to highlight the physical abominations that are easy for us to recognize, hate, and talk about... but the abominations that come out of the heart are not so easily recognizable perhaps, but just as much an abomination in the eyes of the Lord, perhaps more so.

I would say homosexuality is the "top" abomination that is recognized and talked about. Probably the next on the list, would be the women and men wearing each other's clothes, especially in OP circles. And the rest are mostly forgotten about... which I think is what you are trying to point out.

Problem is that humans as a whole are able to judge each other by appearances, or at least think we can. Judging the condition of someone's heart is not so easily done, and so therefore, the outward physical appearances remains the easiest thing to judge one another by.

I would like to add this.... that when Jesus walked this earth, he did not spend his time addressing outward physical issues. I don't believe homosexuality was even once addressed directly by Jesus in the gospels. Correct me if I'm wrong. Jesus never corrected anyone for having the wrong clothing on, or wearing jewelry, or a woman with makeup on.

To my knowledge, Jesus never singled anyone out because of their outward appearance... but He ALWAYS dealt with a heart issue they had instead. He never minced any words, and called the Pharisees all kinds of things because of their HEART condition.

We would do well to understand WHY Jesus did this... and then seek to apply that principle to our own lives.

I think about the fact that it was the religious people who brought the woman who was caught in adultery before Jesus to get his opinion. According to the written word of the law, this woman was to be put to death. We find out that Jesus' purpose on earth was not to condemn, but to save. He knows there is nobody, and I mean none of us that are without some level of behavioural sin in our life, maybe even an abomination! Our human nature is to judge others, but Christ's nature is to save others.

IMO, to be more Christ-like, we should not use scripture as a tool to condemn or judge others, but rather use scripture in a positive way to help save them. Here is the way of salvation. I'm not condemning you for where you are right now. Go and sin no more. Seek the way of righteousness.

It is argued that an abomination and an abomination unto God are not the same thing.

That is why they continue to misapply Deut 22:5.

Lying is an abomination unto God. That one is rarely enforced.

I did a study on this a while back. Here are the scriptures that I was able to find that specifically mention "abomination unto the Lord" or "abomination unto God".

1. All unrighteous are an abomination to the Lord.

Deuteronomy 25:15-16 But thou shalt have a perfect and just weight, a perfect and just measure shalt thou have: that thy days may be lengthened in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. For all that do such things, and all that do unrighteously, are an abomination unto the LORD thy God.


2. The froward is an abomination to the Lord.
Proverbs 3:32 For the froward is abomination to the LORD: but his secret is with the righteous.


3. He that justifieth the wicked is an abomination to the Lord.
Proverbs 17:15 He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the LORD.


4. A false balance is an abomination to the Lord.
Proverbs 11:1 A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.


5. Again, the froward are an abomination to the Lord.
Proverbs 11:20 They that are of a froward heart are abomination to the LORD: but such as are upright in their way are his delight.


6. Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord.
Proverbs 12:22 Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.


7. The way of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord.
Proverbs 15:9 The way of the wicked is an abomination unto the LORD: but he loveth him that followeth after righteousness.


8. The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord.
Proverbs 15:8 The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD: but the prayer of the upright is his delight.


9. Divers weights are an abomination unto the Lord.
Proverbs 20:23 Divers weights are an abomination unto the LORD; and a false balance is not good.
Proverbs 20:10 Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the LORD.


10. That which is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.
Luke 16:15 And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.


11. A graven or molten image is an abomination to the Lord.
Deuteronomy 27:15 Cursed be the man that maketh any graven or molten image, an abomination unto the LORD, the work of the hands of the craftsman, and putteth it in a secret place. And all the people shall answer and say, Amen.


12. The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the Lord.
Proverbs 15:26 The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the LORD: but the words of the pure are pleasant words.


13. Proud in heart an abomination to the Lord.
Proverbs 16:5 Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished.


14. A blemished sacrifice is an abomination unto the Lord.
Deuteronomy 17:1 Thou shalt not sacrifice unto the LORD thy God any bullock, or sheep, wherein is blemish, or any evilfavouredness: for that is an abomination unto the LORD thy God.


15. Money made from prostitutes used for a vow is an abomination unto God.
Deuteronomy 23:18 Thou shalt not bring the hire of a whore, or the price of a dog, into the house of the LORD thy God for any vow: for even both these are abomination unto the LORD thy God.


16. Men and women wearing each other's clothing is an abomination unto the Lord.
Deuteronomy 22:5 The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God.


17. A man remarrying his wife whom he put away is an abomination before the Lord.
Deuteronomy 24:4 Her former husband, which sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after that she is defiled; for that is abomination before the LORD: and thou shalt not cause the land to sin, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.


18. Using the silver or gold from burnt idols is an abomination to the Lord.
Deuteronomy 7:25 The graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire: thou shalt not desire the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it unto thee, lest thou be snared therein: for it is an abomination to the LORD thy God.


19. Burning fire to other gods is an abomination unto the Lord.
Deuteronomy 12:31 Thou shalt not do so unto the LORD thy God: for every abomination to the LORD, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods; for even their sons and their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods.
