Talking Mens dress standards in the upc church

I would like to know where in the bible it states men cannot wear shorts. I will let you know that I myself wear shorts I know all of the scriptures that deal with modesty none tell me that I cannot wear shorts. And on the hair issue with womem how do you classify long hair. woman can have hair to her shoulders and it is long.

Great questions. These have been covered and recovered and recovered here. For new memebers often they are not sure how to search for topics on here. There is a serach function. But you have asked valid questions.

There is nothing remotely speaking about men and shorts. As you stated modesty is talked about. One persons limits or ceiling on what is modest is another persons beginning or floor on what is modest. A person has to workout their salvation through a realtionship with the Lord and I believe in that communication that He will reveal what He wants. Men and women here are baised on both sides. Listen to the Lord and what he wants.

The length issue is one of the most debated issues on this forum. One persons long is another persons short. I attended church for the first 20 years of my life with a lady and her family. She had not cut or trimmed her hair in anyway since she was 18. She is now in her late 30's. Her hair is to her shoulders, but barely touches as far down as her shoulder blades. People look at her and think she cuts. She doesn't. My wife has hair to the lower part of her back and from time time she trims it. Which is considered long in most people mind? It again is a level or conviction one must work out with the Lord. I have no issues with wear shorts and women cutting hair. I started a thread about me getting some tattoos for goodness sake. I was raised very conservative, but everyone has to come to the point and make limits on what is ok and what is not. Make your choices and stick with them.

Re: Mens dress standards in the upc church

I just feel we have visitors to our church and I have seen women that wear pants I have no problem with this as they are womens pants not mens pants and they show less skin than a skirt. but they come one sunday and then do not come back I know they feel out of place but what can the church do to keep people coming back. I don't care if you walk into church in your pj's you come to worship god and that is all that matters.

I have seen this many time over the years. My experience is that though they might feel different about the pants issues I am not certain that is the only thing keeping them away. Our churches are losing memebers like you wouldn't believe. I saw stats from Barna Research that Non-Denominal churches are gaining memebers while denominations are losing. I know that my church specifically have lost lots of members. As have others around us. The non-denoms are growing in size and some of them follow oneness teaching except the strict judemental dress code and similar things. Some of the largest churches here are of the oneness background but nothing like a UPC church. Comfort level is key. Even if a church believes certain things are heaven and hell make the church accomodating to visitors and then once they join teach them. I am affraid the big down fall is that people can feel the judgemental spirit looking their way greater than the spirit of God moving.

The beauty of a forum is that it has a life cycle like any other dynamic living document...........and sometimes the old becomes new again, but you have new people posting new things, and it's really not that old after all.

Kind of like a preacher who pastors the same church for 30 years - eventually, you're going to preach the same message at least twice. The difference is that you have new people (hopefully), and the preacher has had new experiences that help him to add freshness.

I am like you sometimes, to be honest, I get tired of the same old standards, steppers, trintarians are going to hell threads, but I must admit, sometimes when they're resurrected, new thoughts emerge.

In any case, I think we should allow our new members some latitude. If it appears that they are here only for a fight, they'll eventually burn out!
