Explain Verse Two

Come on all you Bible buffs, explain verse two in context with verses 1, 3-4 and/or the rest of the chapter.

Ps 24:1-4
1 The earth is the LORD's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.
2 For he hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods.
3 Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in his holy place?
4 He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. (KJV)

Do you take scripture literally always?

How about 2 Samuel 22..10-11

He bowed the heavens also, and came down; and darkness was under his feet.

God is a Spirit..Did David literally see him?...

11 And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: and he was seen upon the wings of the wind.

Did God climb on the back of a cherub and ride like in a rodeo?..

I believe there are literal passages and non literal passages..many have symbolic meanings and I believe your scripture displays such..

That's fine, but what do you believe it means? How does it relate to the context of the rest of the chapter? That's the question. The whole chapter flows and inter-relates, but this one verse seems to be abstractly different. I am curious as to what people think this means.

Re: Explain Verse Two

It is a poetic reference to Gen 1:9 where we read the waters were gathered together and the dry land appeared.

Excellent!!! Thanks for that. I was thinking on those lines, but didn't think of the scripture reference.

Re: Explain Verse Two

Me, I believe it says He established the earth on the water of the earth and I believe in the flood in Noahs day the land or continents separated and floated away from each other.

In Genesis 1 it state that God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty-in darkness, and darkness was over the surface of the DEEP, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. I believe that your verse is talking about God creating the earth. That He made it to cover over the darkness like in verse 2 of Genesis. Also in verse 2 it said darkness, or earth, covered the face of the DEEP and God spirit hovered over it all. I think that it is merely saying God created the earth which was was darkness and that darkness covered the waters or was on the waters. IMO

Like with Blume you have defined verse 2 by itself. How does it relate to verses 1 & 3?

For me I see that in verse 1 it is evident that the earth is God's. Verse 3 to me asks who dares to challenge God cause it says 'stand in HIS holy place. I believe the rest of the chapter tells us that God will take care of us if we are worship him and not ourselves. I believe the first part of the verse is to validate God's power and authority in the earth.

Okay, I can accept that, but it brings up the question of context. We know that the verses were added by the translators, so there is nothing spiritual about the verse number.

When written it flowed with verse one and verse three, but it seems to be an "out in left field statement." I don't believe that is correct. I believe it carries the same context as the other statements?

Do you feel I am wrong and it is just a statement that corresponds to Gen 1:9 or do you see my point and thing there is significance within the context of the whole Psalms?

Just being plainly scientific, there is water under all the land and so I think that is also what He meant. That was my original thought.
