40 stripes???

I was talking to someone recently about Jesus receiving 40 stripes. The only problem is that scripture doesn’t say he received 40 stripes. Are there some good historical sources that hold this tradition?

Deut 25:3 Forty stripes may be given him, but not more, lest, if one should go on to beat him with more stripes than these, your brother be degraded in your sight.

The Jews gave 39 to avoid breaking the command

Paul’s lashings.
2 Cor 11:24 Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less one.


Issue here is that Jesus was delivered to the Romans. The Jews did not carry out the punishment.

I remember growing up hearing about the Roman whip being the called the cat of 9 tails. I have heard and even been guilty of claiming Jesus received 40 stripes. A whip with 9 ends of glass and sharp stones do not equal 39 nor 40 stripes. For it to be such a popular teaching, I would think there is some historical resource that has led people to consistently teach Jesus received stripes.

I don't know when that book was published, but the rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar" was put out in 1971, and includes the scene with Pilate and "The 39 Lashes". So the idea was floating around in charismatic and Word of Faith movement circles as well as in hippie and "Jesus People" circles in the late 60s/early 70s.

Maybe Michaelthedisciple knows more about this.

1. I’m not sure about the Roman whip being a cat o’ nine tails. The cat o’ nine tails is said to have originated in the British Navy and army. Not sure if that’s accurate. But I don’t see any evidence of the Roman (or even the Jewish) scourge whip being multiple strands. That may be the process of urban legend adding to the scripture. Maybe with a little Cap’n Hook and Peter Pan served up on the side.

2. By His stripes we are healed. Entirely scriptural, Old and New Testaments. Fulfillment of prophecy and historical fact. It just doesn’t (to my knowledge) mention the number of stripes 39 or 40 or any other.

Thank you for the info. I just going from my memory of
some childhood preachers. Although, I still have much respect for the elders of my youth that is why it is important to do our own research.
