Luke 14:12-14, Another Easily Ignored Command.
Professional Pulpit Talkers and Busy Bible Pundits who think they are kept by The Word within their shallow and speculative chit-chat like to ignore this Command from Jesus.
"When you make a dinner or a supper, do not call your friends, nor your brothers, nor your relatives, nor your rich neighbors; lest they also invite you later, and recompense you. But when you make a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: and you will be blessed; for they cannot pay you back: for you will be paid back at the resurrection of the just."
To minimize the worthless and chatty personal thoughts from respondents here, I will list the crystal clear salient features of this Command which relate to modern self assured American Christians:
1.) State who were the people which have attended any occasion oriented meals at your house in the last 5 years. Were any of them your friends, brothers, relatives, or self sufficient neighbors? Hopefully not. Were any of them poor, maimed, lame, or blind? Yes? No?
2.) Did you make the usual errors of inviting people over to "have a nice time," "to celebrate a season or accomplishment," "to share The Gospel," or to "just get together to show your love for them?" All of those reasons are false. The only reason given by Jesus here is to give dinners and suppers so that we will be rewarded at our resurrection. No other reason is given.
God and His Word are to be honored with competent English comprehension skills, not with chatty little intuitive notions about "Nice Things!!" which merely fill up our time here on Earth with cozy feelings. Speak to your wife about this before she disobeys Jesus again.
